Besides the INSANE amount of currently airing shows that I watch I also tend to watch a lot of re-runs on TV, DVD or Netflix. This list was actually very difficult because there are many shows I watch that are no longer on the air.
From 1998-2006 the WB aired this supernatural drama that followed the halliwell sisters as they realize they are witches and deal with all that it entails. Not only are they witches but they are the “charmed ones” the most powerful good witches of all time. Along with dealing with everyday activities they also battle evil to protect the innocent. It was the 2nd longest lasting drama broadcast by the WB as well as the 2nd longest hour-long showrunner featuring all female leads. It was the first prime-time show about a coven of witches, Each of the 4 sisters ranked on AOLTV’s top tv witches list (piper ranking 3rd) and the show ranked 10th on AOL TV’s 20 greatest supernatural shows of all time list.
9.Drop Dead Diva
This Legal-Drama/Comedy/Fantasy program aired from 2009-2014 on lifetime and followed Jane (Brooke Elliot) a model who after dying returns in the body of a plus sized lawyer. Deb was a shallow, not so bright model who although she had not done bad acts also had never performed an act of kindness either. Following her accidental death she finds a way to return to earth but enters the body of Jane Bingum, a plus-sized lawyer (who happens to work at the law firm where Deb’s fiance just got hired). With the help of her guardian angel Fred & her best friend Stacy Deb/Jane learns to deal with her new circumstances, keeping her identity a secret and doing good for the world which she had never done as Deb.
The only comic book show on the list Smallville ran from 2001-2011, had 10 seasons and aired on the WB/CW (as did many shows on this list). It focused on a young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) and Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) while Clark grows into adulthood dealing not only with the normal, everyday issues of growing up but with the burden of his secret and trying to learn to control his superhuman abilities and growing into the hero he is destined to become. On the flip side, his friend Lex is also dealing with his trust issues, feeling as though his friend is lying to him we see how he becomes the villain we know he becomes. Probably my favourite portrayal of Lex, Rosenbaum is capable of making you feel for Lex while wanting him to lose at the same time.
This is the only sitcom to make my list, Friends ran from 1994-2004 with 263 episodes (10 seasons) and followed 6 friends in New York City. Honestly it doesn’t need anymore explanation than that because I have never met anyone who hasn’t seen it.
6.One Tree Hill
This American teen drama aired from 2003-2012 on UPN/CW and followed a complicated timeline which included 2 time jumps and is one of very few television dramas which continued without lead characters. It starts by following Lucas Scott (Chad Micheal Murray) and his half brother Nathan Scott (James Lafferty) as they develop a relationship from enemies to friends to brothers along with girlfriends and friends as well as the adults of Tree Hill. Winner of 2 teen choice awards, this 9 season show lost two main cast members following the 6th season when Chad Michael Murray and Hillary Barton (Peyton) left the show (being written as a “move”) and the 7th season introduced two new characters Clay and Quinn. Although there was a concern about the show’s success following Murray & Barton’s departure, it just shows how amazing the show was that it was able to survive 3 seasons without not only one of the show’s focal couples but 2 of the 5 main protegonists of the show ( 1 of which could have arguable been the LEAD character).
In this Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off (also created by Joss Whedon) Ex-Love of Buffy Summers (and vampire with a soul) Angel (David Boreanaz) settles in Los Angeles on a path to redemption, teaming up with former Buffy classmate Cordelia (Charisma Charpenter) and various new characters. Angel is a darker, more adult version of BTVS in which Angel battles evil with the help of his friends through “Angel Investigations”. The show spanned 5 seasons from 1999-2004, included various crossovers and also continued in Comic form.
4. Ghost Whisperer
Jennifer Love Hewitt starred in this supernatural drama which aired from 2005-2010 and focused on Melinda Gordon, a woman with the ability to speak with the dead. While trying to live a normal life with her husband, Melinda when not running her antique store, helps earth bound spirits resolve their problems and cross over into the light. The show also spawned three novels and two graphic novels and was nominated for multiple emmys although it never won.
The OC was an American Teen Drama that aired on Fox from 2003-2007,spanned 3.5 seasons, won 12 teen choice awards and focused around Ryan Atwood (Benjamin McKenzie), a teenage boy from a troubled home as he gets a second chance and lives with his lawyer’s family( the Cohens) in Orange County. Over the three and a half seasons we follow Ryan, his surrogate brother Seth (Adam Brody), his on and off again girlfriend/neighbour Marissa (Mischa Barton) and Seth’s on again-off again girlfriend & Marissa’s best friend Summer (Rachel Bilson) as well as the adults in the OC. We watch as Ryan grows with the guidance of the Cohens, as he protects those he loves (even when it can interfere with his future) and as he truly becomes part of the family.
Created by Rob Thomas this noir-drama that aired from 2004-2007 followed teenage private Investigator Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell)while she works cases while trying to find answers of her own. The winner of 5 teen choice awards and 2 satellite awards this show had such a passionate following that a kick stater campaign was created where fans donated their money to help fund a follow up movie which was released in 2014, the movie picked up 9 years following the ending of the show (at the characters’ 10 year highschool reunion) and featured many of the original cast members, following the movie Rob Thomas also wrote 2 follow up novels which continue the story. Although the show was cancelled over a decade ago Veronica’s story is still ongoing.
1.Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
created by Joss Whedon Buffy the Vampire Slayer (BTVS) aired from 1997-2003.
