The Thing vs. The Hulk

This week we have the big “hulking” (pun intended) creatures of Marvel, The Thing vs The Hulk. Who would win in a fight? personally I think the Hulk but this isn’t who would win in a fight it’s a who has a better story. So here we go…

Origin Stories

The Thing–First appeared in Fantastic 4 #1 (1961) . He was born Benjamin Grimm and grew up in poverty on Manhattan’s lower east side in NY. His older brother, whom he idolized was killed in a gang fight, leading to him to join the same gang eventually becoming it’s leader. After his parents died in an accident he was sent to the upper west side to live with his aunt & uncle which led to him be denounced by the gang, seen as a sellout for leaving the neighbourhood. He cleaned up his act and graduated high school & went to University on a full athletic scholarship for football. At school he roomed with Reed Richards who would become a life long friend. After college he joined the US Military to pursue his dream of becoming a pilot. He became a test pilot and underwent many dangerous missions, one where he flew Carol Danvers & Logan (Wolverine) to Russia. Ben eventually moved to the astronaut training program. It was after his training as an astronaut that his old friend Reed Richards asked him to pilot a trip to space after the government cut off their funding. He asked Ben to do some unauthorized test flights so the project wouldn’t be shut down and although Ben was worried the ship wouldn’t be shielded enough against cosmic radiation but he was convinced to do it anyway. Ben and Reed along with Reed’s girlfriend Sue Storm and her brother Johnny went into space but the ship was penetrated by cosmic radiation transforming them into super human beings, Ben being transformed into a grotesque beast like creature dubbed “the thing” weighing about 500lbs.

The Hulk–First appeared in Incredible Hulk #1 (1962). He was born Bruce Banner and grew up in an abusive house hold. His father was a drunk who deeply hated him. His mother’s love for him only fuelled his fathers rage. His father was an atomic physicist, he felt as though his son’s exposure to the nuclear power he worked with mutated his sons genes. He developed a high IQ at a young age which only increased his father’s fear. He began to beat Bruce and when Bruce’s mother intervened his father killed her. His bragging led to his incarceration in a psychiatric institution. Bruce was withdrawn and was possibly developing a split personality to deal with his pain and rage. He found it hard to develop friendships and was often the victim of physical abuse at the hands of school bullies. Bruce got expelled for planting a dud bomb in the basement of the school, the military then took notice of his genius. He earned a doctorate in nuclear physics and went to work with the military. He was working on a gamma bomb with the defence department in New Mexico when he saved a teenager who wandered on to the test site, he then was hit full blast with gamma radiation. He survived but the blast led to a change in him. When his adrenaline rises he transforms into the hulk, a green 7-8 foot 1150 lb creature, the rest of the time he is still Bruce Banner, 5’9″ and 128lbs.

Winner–Both have very detailed origin stories I give the edge to the Thing because there is more detail about every stage of his life.

Ben– Ben Grimm is classified by Marvel as having an average IQ

Bruce–Bruce Banner is classified by Marvel as a Extraordinary Genius with genius in almost all intellectual areas.

Winner–Bruce is smarter than Ben according to Marvel’s intelligence data base.

The Thing–The thing has a potentially incalculable strength with the ability to lift an excess of 100 tons

The Hulk– The hulk has a potentially incalculable strength with the ability to lift an excess of 100 tons

Winner–According to the marvel strength scale they are equal in terms of strength

Team Affiliation

The Thing–fantastic four, avengers, defenders

The Hulk–avengers, defenders, fantastic four,

Winner–Virtually the same affiliations so tie again

Abilities | According to Marvel Database

The Thing– Ben is an exceptionally skilled and experienced pilot, proficient with many varieties of both conventional and exotic aircraft, and was also trained as an astronaut. He is uniquely gifted in the art of hand-to-hand combat (a skill Ben honed long before he became the Thing), though his fighting style tends to be a rather loose brawling technique all his own. In his youth, Ben was a talented football player

The Hulk–Dr. Bruce Banner is a genius in nuclear physics, possessing a mind so brilliant that it cannot be measured on any known intelligence test. When Banner is the Hulk, Banner’s consciousness is buried within the Hulk’s, and can influence the Hulk’s behavior only to a very limited extent.

Winner: The winner of this one would be Ben since he has a larger variety of abilities as opposed to Banner who’s abilities are mostly all intellectual.
