The unanticipation of antman

Over the next few years there are many comic based movies coming out. You must have heard all the buzz about  Batman vs superman, Civil War, Dr. Strange & Suicide Squad all set to be released in 2016. That’s only just a few of the very highly anticipated films coming in the next two years but there is a movie coming, just around the corner in July 2015 only two months after the  second avengers film Age of Ultron, this upcoming film is Antman.

I was just reading an article in which Antman was refered to as the “red headed step child of the marvel franchise” which I think is meant to point out the lack of excitement for this upcoming movie as well as the lack of promotion happening there is two reasons for this 1) It is right after Age of Ultron, a movie people have been looking forward to for the past few years since the success of the first Avengers film. 2) It is not big enough to be the kick off for Phase Three which goes to Captain America 3: Civil War.

Lets start with some of the things that have people excited about the other movies I mentioned 2014-12-18 20-07-48

1. The casts. So part of the big buzz about the Suicide Squad is it’s all star cast: Will Smith, Jared Leto, Tom Hardy etc. the same with Doctor Strange, most of the buzz about that upcoming movie is that Benedict Cummerbatch has been casted in the title role.  Who’s staring in the ant-man movie? There is still an all-star cast: Paul Rudd & Michael Douglas for starters.

2. The link to other films–The Avengers “2”, Captain America “3”, Thor “3” previous movies all set the stage for those but this is the first antman movie so there’s nothing already watched to be hyped from. This might help though–there are also these characters in the film: Peggy Carter (who has been in other MCU films as well as the upcoming Agent Carter show which may lead into it more)& Howard Stark.

3. The popularity of the characters–Of those other movies I mentioned we have very popular heroes: Ironman, Batman, Superman, Captain America as well as popular villains: Harley Quinn & Joker for instance. Ant-man is not as well known to the general public which could be why there are less people interested.

4. It kinda sounds stupid– For those who don’t follow comics but instead just watch the movies a title like “ant man” might not be exactly something that gets you excited. If that is the case, here is the synopsis:

The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man. Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

So who is Antman?

Antman premiered in Marvel Comics in 1979. He is the alter ego of Scott Lang, an engineer who when unable to support his family turned to a life of crime. He served prison time (supposed to be a 5 year sentence but got released early due to good behaviour). He began working at Stark International following his release.

When his daughter was diagnosed with a fatal heart condition, Lang sought help from Dr. Erica Sondheim, who was kidnapped by Cross Technological Enterprises founder Darren Cross, for help with his own heart condition. In order to rescue her, and save his daughter, Lang broke in to the home of Dr. Henry Pym, the first Ant-Man, and stole his technology. After a successful rescue, Lang tried to turn himself in, but Pym allowed him to keep the suit, but for the purpose of good. []

He can shrink to half an inch as antman and communicate with insects and also has the strength of a full grown man even when he is shrunk 2014-12-18 21-13-36_clipped_rev_1

He is also during his comic career a member of the Avengers, the fantastic 4 & heroes for hire.

There is no trailer out yet, at least that I can find, I am looking foward to it as a Comic fan, a MCU fan and I really enjoy the antman story line, Hopefully this post gave enough info to get others interested as well. Too bad Marvel Studios isn’t promoting it much yet but i’m sure they’ll get to it.
